A water main break caused flooding and approximately 8 feet of mud, damaging at least two homes in the Hollywood Hills Saturday, officials said.
The water main break was reported about 1:30 a.m. in the 8500 block of Appian Way, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The break caused mud to slide against two homes, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. About 40 residents were left without water service.

Firefighters were dispatched to the location at 7:39 a.m., where transportation officials assisted in closing off Appian Way with barricades.
Building and Safety and the Los Angeles Fire Department are assessing structural integrity of the damaged homes.
No injuries have been reported.
