Weekend: Make Merry at the Free Bob Baker Day

Marionettes, a carnival, and good fun shall shine at LA State Historic Park.

Bob Baker Day: There surely has to be a reason why "merry" and "marionette" sound so similar. Surely? Well, they both have happiness at heart, a happiness that will shine, quite merrily, at LA State Historic Park on Saturday, Feb. 23. That's when this annual celebration frolics, complete with a carnival, eats, and good times. More good times await, of course, for it was announced this week that the Bob Baker Marionette Theater has a new permanent home in Highland Park. As for the Feb. 23 party? It's free, another pretty darn merry word.

RESCUECON: Pairing wonderful animals with wonderful homes? A rescue organization's work is truly never done, for there is always a rabbit, bird, kitten, or pup that is need of a little TLC, a bit of time, and a fresh start. If these are matters are near to your heart, you'll want to be in Oxnard on Feb. 23 or 24, where a free adoption fair and a ticketed convention will take place. Look for a number of speakers and seminars, covering a host of topics and issues that impact dogs, cats, and a plethora of critters, too. Details? Woof woof.

Pug Yoga: Speaking of cuddlesome canines, there is this fresh entry into the world of yoga classes that involve holding a pose while an adorable animal struts/naps/chills nearby. And if these snarfly little lovebugs are your jam, and you've been needing to practice your tree pose, best sign up for the event, which helps out Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles. The partners on the cute-cute Feb. 23 happening? Downward Grog and Indie Brewing Company (look for half-priced brews following class).

Haunt X The Ultimate DIY Haunters Expo: There are more Southern Californians who obsess over Halloween, all year long, than there are pumpkins in a patch, practically. These are the people who put together truly terrific yard and home haunts, but those haunts don't just begin on Oct. 1. The creators work on them around the calendar, pretty much, which means this Pomona gathering of home-haunting pros is right on time, even seven months ahead of the spookiest holiday. Tickets and all of the chilling stuff that's on the line-up? Eek!

Brews to Stews: We may seek to nest a bit more when it is brisk out, but we also long for richer eats, the kind of eats that can be deemed "comfort food." Which means that we have to de-nest, for a few hours, and head out into the world, if we want to find some fun February food events. Such as? There's a Coffee and Donut Festival in San Bernardino, a day devoted to chili tasting at Santa Anita Park, and the Los Angeles Beer and World BBQ Festival in Chinatown. How to decide, though? They're all scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23.
