2 Arrested in Street Racing Crash That Killed Woman

A 41-year-old woman was killed and several other people were injured, including her 11-year-old passenger, in a three-vehicle collision where two vehicles were street racing in Whittier, police said Saturday.

The crash happened at 8:40 p.m. Friday on Colima Road just north of Mar Vista Street, according to Lt. Aaron Ruiz of the Whittier Police Department.

A white Hyundai and a black BMW were traveling north on Colima Road at excessive speeds when one of the cars lost control and struck the other.

While the black BMW spun out and came to a rest on the eastern edge of the highway, the collision caused the Hyundai to cross over the centerline into southbound traffic and hit a Honda Accord, Ruiz said.

The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries, Ruiz said. Her ID was not released pending notification of kin. Her passenger, an 11-year-old boy, also was taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Hyundai and a passenger in that vehicle were taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life threatening as well.

Police arrested 22-year-old Corey Kiefer and 22-year-old Jacob Zamora on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving and engaging in speeding contest, Ruiz said.
