"It's terrible when we lose anyone in Los Angeles, but especially on Christmas," LAPD Officer Jeff Nolte said. "While we're running around from our family to the next stop, these people are devastated by this."

The victim, also a mother, came to South LA for a Christmas party, and she is not involved in any gang activity, police said.

After the shooting, family members rushed her to a hospital, where she died.

Police believe the shooter or shooters may have driven away in a dark pickup truck after firing about six shots.
