Long Beach Prepares for Powerful Storm

"This storm may be even bigger than I anticipate," said SoCal tourist

Long Beach is taking storm preparations to the next level -- city workers transported truckloads of sand Thursday morning to help reinforce a berm protecting homes along the peninsula.

The sand is also available to residents who wish to fill sandbags for their homes.

"We were driving down the coast and we saw the berns, and we thought this is kind of interesting. We knew the weather was coming in, we were a little bit surprised. This storm may be even bigger than I anticipated. I may not want to hang out here too late," said Dickie Hunter, a Long Beach visitor.

With mounting flooding concerns, residents have begun covering their patio furniture and placing sandbags around storm drains in anticipation of unsually heavy rain, which is projected to move into the area late Thursday.

Lifeguards are also warning residents and tourists to stay out of the surf, which is expected to bring 10 to 12 foot swells into the area.
