A woman found Thursday in downtown Long Beach with a gunshot wound to her upper body died at a hospital and the investigation led to a nearby home that was surrounded by a SWAT team, but no one was found inside.
Paramedics responded just before 8 a.m. to the 300 block of Magnolia Avenue -- near the courthouse building and a Long Beach police station -- and took the victim to a hospital, where she died, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The woman's age and name were not immediately available and a possible motive for the killing was not disclosed. A man seen leaving the area on foot was described as a possible suspect, police said.
Evidence led investigators to a home in the 300 block of Daisy Avenue, where officers served a search warrant and a SWAT team was subsequently called in, Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy said.
Nearby homes were evacuated and others in the area were urged to stay inside, Dandoy said. Loud bangs were heard coming from the home about 5:50 p.m., according to a report from the scene. The SWAT team made entry but no one was found inside and all evacuations and street closures were lifted, Dandoy said.
"The investigation is ongoing...," she said.
Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call Long Beach police at 562-435-6711 or 911.
