Shelter Pets Are Dangerously Low on Food. Here's How to Help

"If you are out getting cranberry sauce, please grab a can or two of pet food for shelter animals,'' said spcaLA Vice President Miriam Davenport.

What to Know

  • spcaLA goes through 75,000 pounds of pet food every year -- that's the weight of about 7 SUVs.
  • The stores of pet food and cat litter have diminished to almost nothing.
  • Ways to help: host a donation drive at an office, school or community gathering space, shop and ship needed items and more.

The pet food reserves of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles are dangerously low, the nonprofit announced Friday.

"If you are out getting cranberry sauce, please grab a can or two of pet food for shelter animals,'' said spcaLA Vice President Miriam Davenport.

"We go through around 75,000 pounds of pet food every year -- that's the weight of about 7 SUVs.''

After a particularly busy summer season -- with a "kitten season'' that never ended -- the stores of pet food and cat litter have diminished to almost nothing, Davenport said.

The supplies of canned and dry kitten food are completely exhausted, and stores of dry and canned cat, dog and puppy food, as well as non-clumping cat litter and dogs chews for enrichment, are depleted.

There are many ways to help. Compassionate citizens can host a donation drive at an office, school or community gathering space. Shop and ship needed items via spcaLA's AmazonSmile Charity Wishlist, make a tax-deductible donation at spcaLA.com, or pick up a few items for shelter pets while out shopping this holiday season.
