Macy's at South Bay Galleria Evacuated as Police Search For Potentially Armed Man

Investigators continue to search for an armed man who triggered a lockdown at Redondo Beach's South Bay Galleria after a smash-and-grab robbery inside a Macy's Thursday afternoon.

Shoppers inside the department store were evacuated and the retailer was placed on lockdown for more than two hours as police investigated, police said. Several other stores in the mall also voluntarily closed, including the Kohl's department store.

Around 12:10 p.m. police received a call of a man with a gun inside the Macy's department store, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department's Sgt. Shawn Freeman.

Redondo Beach police said surveillance video showed a male suspect used a gun to smash a display case of watches and then fled with merchandise.

"Nobody was injured," Freeman said. "It looks like nobody was threatened by the gun or gun pointed at them. Looks like he just was using the gun to smash the display case."

Investigators are hoping surveillance cameras both inside and outside the store will give them a good look at the suspect.
