Mail Thieves Target Ventura County

Residents in Ventura County sending mail during the holidays should spare themselves the risk of being targeted by thieves and just visit the post office, detectives urged.

Mail thieves have been swiping checks for bill payments, credit card applications and more to steal personal information.

"They obtain your personal information to obtain funds from your bank account or opening up accounts in your name," Camarillo Police Detective TJ DeSalvo said.

Thieves can put their own names on promotional checks from stores, for example, and open an account in someone else's name, he said.

DeSalvo suggests residents mailing checks or gifts during the holiday send them directly from the post office.
