Man Dies, Another in Serious Condition After Mid-Wilshire Duplex Fire

The uncle was able to escape the first-floor unit but firefighters found his nephew inside in grave condition.

A 75-year-old man has died and his 88-year-old uncle is in serious condition due to smoke inhalation after a fire in a Los Angeles duplex.

The Fire Department says the fire broke out before 4 a.m. Friday in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles. The men were apparently awakened by smoke alarms.

The uncle was able to escape the first-floor unit but firefighters found his nephew inside in grave condition. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which was confined to the unit.

Four residents of an upstairs unit were expected to return to their residence, which had only minimal damage.
