A man was convicted Wednesday of killing an 8-year-old boy in a drive-by attack on a Pomona home last year.
A jury in Pomona deliberated for less than two hours before finding Sengchan Houl, 36, guilty of one count each of first-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle, along with two counts each of shooting at an occupied dwelling and negligent discharge of a firearm.
Jurors also found true a special circumstance allegation that the murder involved a firearm being discharged from a motor vehicle.
Houl was in a vehicle when he fired at a home in the 1100 block of West 11th Street on Feb. 20, 2017. Jonah Hwang. who had been with his family inside the home visiting friends, died at a hospital.
Houl also shot at the same home once before the boy was killed and then again twice afterward, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. A motive for the shootings wasn't clear.
Houl was arrested by Pomona police about five weeks after the boy's shooting, and has remained jailed without bail since then.
Prosecutors opted not to seek the death penalty against the defendant, who is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is set for Jan. 29.
