Father in Riverside County Convicted of Shooting Daughter's Boyfriend in the Head

The victim underwent surgery, from which he eventually recovered.

A Calimesa man who shot his daughter's boyfriend in the head after discovering the victim in her bedroom was convicted Wednesay of attempted voluntary manslaughter.

A Riverside jury deliberated one day before finding 54-year-old Scott Edward Beck guilty of the felony count and acquitting him of a sentence-enhancing allegation of inflicting great bodily injury.

The defendant, who's being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail, is expected to be sentenced to less than five years behind bars.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Steven Counelis scheduled a sentencing hearing for June 7.

According to the prosecution's trial brief, Beck and his wife had instructed their daughter not to bring her boyfriend, a convicted felon identified in court documents as "A.C.," into their home in the 8600 block of Calimesa Boulevard, near Wildwood Canyon Road. However, in the predawn hours of May 10, 2018, she invited him over while her parents were asleep, according to Deputy District Attorney Josh DeGonia.

Heather Beck discovered the two in her daughter's bedroom and alerted her husband, who became incensed, grabbed a rifle and forced his way into the bedroom about 6:30 a.m., according to the prosecutor, who said A.C. attempted to hide underneath the bed sheets while the young woman sat atop him in a vain effort at concealment.

The defendant demanded that his daughter get out of the way or risk being shot, according to the trial brief. She went outside to call 911, as Beck leveled the rifle at the victim's head, jabbing him hard enough with the business end of the firearm that it punctured the victim's skin and caused him to bleed, according to the prosecution.

"He told (A.C.), 'I'm not going to let you go. What do I have to do, shoot you?"' DeGonia wrote.

After his wife allegedly asked him what he was waiting for, the defendant fired a single shot into A.C.'s head, according to the prosecutor, who said deputies arrived a few minutes later. The bullet lodged near the front of the man's cranium, striking bone, not brain tissue, according to DeGonia.

The victim underwent surgery, from which he eventually recovered.
