Police Seek Attackers After Man Killed Trying to Break Up Brawl in Riverside

Adam Valles tried to help a man being beaten outside of a Riverside restaurant on Aug. 11.

A 28-year-old man who attempted to break up a caught-on-camera brawl last week outside of a Riverside restaurant died from his injuries Thursday.

Adam Valles, an Azusa resident, was leaving the Hideaway Cafe in downtown Riverside with his sister on Aug. 11 when they saw a man being beaten by three people, according to Crystal Dawn, a friend of the victim.

After checking on the victim, Valles was tackled from behind, prompting him to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk, said Jessica Smith Torres, another friend of Valles.

Cellphone video captured the chaos, with one man on the ground, motionless, as several others were fighting around him. Police said several people suffered traumatic injuries.

Valles was taken to the hospital with brain damages, according to his family. He remained in the ICU, where he died six days later.

"This is absolutely ridiculous, heartbreaking," Torres said. "We can't let his children know without these people being put to justice."

The cellphone video shows the heavily populated area the night of the attack. Police think there may be more cellphone videos from more witnesses.

Anyone with information regarding the attack is urged to contact the Riverside Police Department at 951-354-2007.
