Man Killed by Suspected DUI Driver in Huntington Beach

A 51-year-old man died after being struck by a pickup truck driven by a suspected drunk driver in Huntington Beach, police said Saturday.

Officers responded to a call of a traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian in the area of Warner Avenue and Rotterdam Lane at 9 p.m. Friday and located a pedestrian in need of medial attention, according to Sgt. Julio Mendez of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

Paramedics were requested and the victim was transported to a hospital where he later died, Mendez said.

The driver of a black 2003 Chevy Avalanche involved in the crash remained at the scene and, upon further investigation, was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence, said Mendez.

Investigators believe the victim entered the westbound lanes of Warner Avenue when he was struck by the truck traveling west on Warner Avenue, Mendez said. It's unclear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.
