Man Killed in Police Shooting in Harbor Gateway

A man allegedly armed with a gun was killed Monday in a police shooting in the Harbor City area, police said.

Officers were sent to the 16700 block of Denver Avenue at about 6:40 a.m. on a report of a family dispute with shots fired, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"As officers were responding, there was additional information that the suspect was in the intersection of Figueroa (Street) and Gardena Boulevard with a firearm," a police statement said.

"As officers arrived at that intersection, there was an officer-involved shooting," police said. "The suspect was struck by gunfire, and pronounced deceased at scene."

Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of his relatives.

"It appears as though the suspect fired at the officers," police said. "There is a bullet hole in the passenger door of the police car."

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said. No officers were injured.

The shooting was under investigation.
