Man Taken Into Custody After 11-Hour Standoff in South Gate

A 11-hour standoff came to an end early Thursday morning in South Gate after police took the man into custody.

The standoff was reported around 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the 5800 block of Imperial Highway. Several nearby residents were evacuated from their apartments as a precaution.

Police said the standoff began after a dispute between the man and his girlfriend. The man had been evading authorities for about two weeks, according to the South Gate Police Department.

Police responded to the location and attempted to make contact with the man, who then ran inside his mother's apartment home and barricaded himself inside the unit, police said.

A SWAT unit was deployed around midnight, and tear gas was thrown in the apartment unit, according to the South Gate Police Department.

Police took the man into custody around 3:30 a.m. after he emerged from hiding in the attic and surrendered on the roof.

No hostages were taken during the standoff and no injuries were reported.

The man taken into custody was not identified by police.
