Gunman Spotted in Downtown LA, Man Arrested

A man allegedly carrying a gun was spotted by police in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday but fled into an apartment building, prompting an extensive search that eventually led to him being taken into custody.

An officer was in the 500 block of South Main Street, near Fifth Street, about 3:25 p.m. when he saw two men in an argument, according Los Angeles Police Department Detective Meghan Aguilar.

"The argument escalated and the suspect produced a handgun and saw (the) officer, at which point the suspect ran into an apartment complex," Aguilar said.

Officers surrounded the building, and a police dog was brought in to assist in the perimeter search, Aguilar said.

The man, who had been described as being in his mid-50s, was taken into custody around 6 p.m. without further incident, Aguilar said. His name was not immediately available.

Officers continued to search for the firearm inside the apartment complex, Aguilar said.
