Metro announced Thursday that it has formed a partnership with the San Francisco-based company Getaround to offer a carsharing service at more than 25 transit park-and-ride lots throughout Los Angeles County.

Getaround allows people to rent and drive cars owned by people in their city, which Metro officials said will help riders complete their first-and last-mile connections.

"Getaround will help riders travel from their Metro station to their destination conveniently, while offering other Metro riders, whose cars go unused, an opportunity to make a little cash on the side. A total win-win," said Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro board Chair Sheila Kuehl.

Getaround is licensed to occupy 110 carshare parking spaces at 27 Metro transit station lots, beginning at $5 per hour depending on vehicle type.

Getaround includes collision and liability insurance for every trip, and Metro riders will receive $25 off their first booking.

All cars shared on Getaround are equipped with the company's integrated hardware and software solution, Getaround Connect, which allows users to book, locate and unlock the car through the app, eliminating the reliance on a physical exchange of keys between owner and renter, Metro officials said.
