Police Chase of Burglary Suspect Ends in Shooting

A 37-year-old man is in custody after leading police on a vehicle chase this morning that triggered an officer-involved shooting in East Los Angeles.

Officers responded about 3 a.m. to a burglary alarm at JCPenney inside The Shops at Montebello, 2134 Montebello Town Center, and reported that a motorist had crashed into the storefront of the business, Montebello Police Lt. William Molinari said.

The motorist fled the location and arriving units spotted him in Pico Rivera, triggering a vehicle pursuit in which the suspect "tried to hit civilian motorists and police units,'' Molinari said.

At some point during the chase an officer-involved shooting occurred in the city of East Los Angeles at Whittier Boulevard and Alma Avenue, he said.

"The suspect was not hit and eventually crashed in the city of Commerce,'' according to a statement from the Montebello Police Department.
