Brain Dead Pregnant Woman Inspires Protesters

The case of a pregnant Haltom City woman being kept on a ventilator at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth is attracting national attention – and demonstrations.

In front of the hospital on Sunday, anti-abortion advocates organized what they call a “prayer vigil” for 33-year-old Marlise Munoz and her family.

The previous Sunday, protesters rallied for another cause – to take the woman off of life support.

“I would just hate to play God in this situation when something beautiful really could come out of this situation,” said Rhonda Aubert of Southlake.

“This is tragic, but I thought of the possibility, what if out of this tragedy, something good from God can come of it?”

Other demonstrators tell NBC DFW they felt compelled enough by the Munoz story to travel from
Louisiana to share their support of the actions of John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth to keep

Munoz is breathing, as is required by Texas state law, due to her pregnancy.

Munoz has been kept on a ventilator since late November, after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

This coming week, she will hit the 22nd week mark in her pregnancy.

The existing law considers a fetus to be viable at between 24 and 26 weeks.

Munoz’s husband Erick filed a law suit to challenge the law last week, saying keeping his wife alive would be against her wishes.

Late Sunday, NBC DFW learned that Judge R.H. Wallace has been assigned the Munoz case after another judge recused herself.

A hearing date has not been set.
