Mother's Day: By the Numbers

Anna Jarvis organized the first official Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908, in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis.

Years after Anna Jarvis held a campaign to establish the day as a holiday, President Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914.

Although you will probably not give your mother a gift as big as a national holiday, experts say you will likely spend over $150 to celebrate your mom.

Here's a look at other things to know this Mother’s Day:

85.4 million - The estimated number of mothers in the U.S., according to the most recent data.

43.5 million - The number of women who are between the ages of 15 and 50 who have children, according to 2014 Census data. The women in this bracket gave birth to 95.8 million children.

411,011 - The number of women age 15 to 50 who have given birth within the past 12 months and were living with a partner without being married, according to 2013 Census data.
