You Can Travel to the Sun With NASA This Summer — Well, Your Name Anyway

The Parker solar probe will carry a microchip inscribed with people's names

Ever wanted to see your name in lights?

This summer, NASA is planning to send a group of people's names onboard its Parker solar probe to the brightest light in the solar system.

Anyone can submit their name online to join a group including William Shatner's on a microchip inside of the probe, which will travel through the vicious heat and radiation of the sun's atmosphere at 430,000 mph after it launches between July 31 and Aug. 19. Submissions are being accepted until April 27 at this website.

The probe will study how solar corona and wind acts. It will have to withstand outside temperatures of nearly 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit despite being about 4 million miles away from the sun.

"This mission will answer questions scientists have sought to uncover for more than six decades," NASA official Thomas Zurbuchen said in a statement.
