TSA Busts Man Hiding Handgun in Checked Luggage at Newark Airport

Police arrested the man on weapons charges at the airport terminal before he boarded his flight

A man was arrested at Newark Airport on Monday after TSA agents found a handgun concealed in the lining of his suitcase, officials said.

The man was heading to Jamaica when he checked the bag with a .22 caliber gun hidden inside. The weapon was not loaded, according to officials.

TSA’s routine screening of checked baggage immediately flagged the suitcase. After inspecting the contents, officials unzipped the bag’s lining to find the gun strapped to the frame.

Port Authority Police immediately confiscated the weapon. Police arrested the man on weapons charges at the airport terminal before he boarded his flight.

TSA regulations allow travelers to travel with firearms in checked baggage as long as they are unloaded and properly packed in a locked, hard-sided case. All weapons must also be declared with paperwork.

It wasn’t immediately known why the man didn’t declare the weapon beforehand.
