Palm Beach K-9 Officer Injured During Fatal Police Shootout

A South Florida police K-9 underwent surgery Friday evening after he was shot during a police standoff.

Palm Beach Sheriff's Office posted a photo to Facebook of Kasper in the operating room after suffering a gunshot in his hind leg. He is expected to survive.

Kasper has been with PBSO for two years and has been assigned to may presidential details, according to NBC affiliate WPTV. It is unknown if the dog will be affected long-term by the injury or if he will return to his police duties following the surgery.

Police fatally shot Philip O'Shea, 46, after they said he fired shots at deputies trying to apprehend him. The suspect was involved in an armed robbery and a carjacking Friday, police said.

Three deputies involved in the shooting were not injured. They are on administrative leave, as part of standard protocol.

The sheriff's office said O'Shea had an extensive criminal history and was wanted in North Carolina in connection with a motel robbery.

State law enforcement agents plan to investigate the shooting.
