Arlington police say a 6-year-old boy is in grave condition after being shot in the head by his older sibling Sunday afternoon.

The boy was first rushed to Mansfield Methodist Medical Center, but was then flown to Cook Children's Medical Center, Arlington police said.

The shooting was reported at about 4:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Cloyne Drive in southeast Arlington.

Police said the victim was shot by his brother who is 10- or 11-years-old and who may be a child with special needs.

The boy somehow got a hold of a .22-caliber rifle, pointed it at his little brother and pulled the trigger, according to Lt. Chris Cook of the Arlington Police Department.

The victim's 6-year-old sister was also struck by shrapnel, according to police.

The victim's parents reportedly denied owning the rifle. An older teenage sibling reportedly told police he purchased the firearm on the street.

Nearby, neighbors watched as police investigators scoured the house for possible evidence, including taking pictures in the garage.

"I am just devastated," said a neighbor who only wanted to be identified as Judy. "It's heartbreaking. I don't understand why people don't put their guns up, you know? You have children, you put them up."

No arrests had been made as of 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
