Apple Patents Hover Sensor

Apple received a patent for a hovering sensor on a smartphone, according to a report.

The patent, U.S. Patent No. 8,614,693, creates a way for a person to interact with a touchscreen by hovering above it, so users can interact with the device without even touching it, according to AppleInsider. The technology isn't as innovative as it sounds, especially since Samsung introduced similar technology in its Galaxy Note 2 smartphone, according to VentureBeat.

But Apple's hove sensor patent is much more exacting, including improving accuracy for users with shaking hands, and deciding between what is a "legitimate" touch/hover and what's accidental, AppleInsider reported.

Apple was also awarded a patent for a heart rate monitor embedded in its smartphones. The patent will allow the device to ascertain the identity of the user based on "cardiac signals" (creepy!) as well as judge mood. We're not sure about the smartphone as an electronic mood ring, but the heart rate monitor does sound like a great feature for the much-rumored Apple iWatch.
