Apple's 3D Map App? Insanely Cool

Apple's new Maps app has stripped Google from the backend, leaving behind an impressive, shiny new 3D rendering.

It took about three years, but the once convivial relationship Apple and Google had with maps is about to spectacularly and officially end.

Apple's new Maps app has stripped Google from the backend, leaving behind an impressive, shiny new 3D rendering that will, according to All Things D, blow your head off.

According to sources on D and 9to5Mac, the new iOS 6 will feature this marquee functionality. "Described as a much cleaner, faster and more reliable experience," Marc Gurman at 9to5 writes.

Back in 2009, Apple started buying 3D and mapping capabilities with Placebase, later adding C3 Technologies and Poly9.

How spectacular are these 3D renderings? The C3 Technologies 3D graphics are reportedly accurate to SIX INCHES.

To gather this data, the companies fly DLSR cameras over cities in multiple passes, according to fastcodesign.com.
