Big Surf, Strong Currents Expected at Beaches on Fourth of July

While a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect, waves are expected to reach six to eight feet along south-facing beaches in north San Diego County

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of dangerous swimming conditions at San Diego Beaches as thousands of locals and visitors are expected to hit the waves for the Fourth of July holiday.

Large breaking waves and strong rip and longshore currents prompted the NWS to issue a beach hazards statement from Wednesday evening through Friday evening.

During that time period, waves are expected to reach six to eight feet along south-facing beaches in north San Diego County, the NWS said.

Waves could be dangerous for swimmers, the NWS warned. The agency urges swimmers to listen to lifeguards and use caution when in or near the water while the beach hazards statement is in effect.

Lifeguards are warning surfers and swimmers to be mindful of their limitations and to be aware of strong rip currents.

"You don't want to fight the current, you want to swim parallel to the shore," one lifeguard advised. "Don't tire yourself out, don't panic, just raise your hand and lifeguards will be on the way to get you."

Lifeguards are also warning beachgoers about stingrays and say swimmers should shuffle their feet while along the shoreline.
