Earlier this month, it was reported that the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet could have the ability to run Android apps.
A new video from the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona has surfaced that just about confirms RIM's new potential plan of attack.
As can clearly be heard in this demonstration video (at about 14 seconds in), the BlackBerry rep says "we'll also support Android apps." He doesn't say that RIM might support Android apps — he says it willright upfront. Take this with a grain of salt, but if he's completely wrong, he probably got axed by now.
This isn't official confirmation that RIM will support Android apps for its PlayBook, but it is a very good sign for things to come. We've said before that Android's vast ecosystem of apps would be a great addition to RIM's puny app arsenal and we're sticking by that.
"If you can't beat them, join them." For the sake of survival, partnerships are necessary. Take a look at Nokia, it literally had so little innovation and leeway in the new smartphone market that it had to turn to Microsoft and Windows Phone 7 or lose relevancy.
If RIM actually moves ahead with Android apps, we think it'll have a better chance at wooing back old BlackBerry fans who left it for Android or the iPhone and bringing in new customers. Because really, the PlayBook is an excellent tablet — it just needs excellent apps too.
