Woman Wounded After Gun Fires on CTA Bus

Victim suffers graze wound, declines transport to a hospital

A Chicago bus passenger found a gun on a seat early Wednesday morning, mistook it for a toy and accidentally fired it, grazing a woman nearby, police say.

The 45-year-old man found the small gun on the #47 CTA bus southbound on West 47th Street at South Kildare Avenue, in the Archer Heights neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side, around 6:30 a.m., according to police and CTA officials.

He thought the gun was a toy or lighter and picked it up, and it discharged, police said. A bullet struck a vent under the row of seats, and a fragment struck a 47-year-old woman in the left thigh.

Police said the bullet did not go through the woman’s skin or clothing, and she declined transport to a hospital.

Police said no charges will be filed, and the incident has been deemed an accident. Officials are trying to track down the owner of the gun.
