A Miami Dolphins football player is in the hospital after he had his arm amputated following an early morning car crash.

Defensive tackle Kendrick Norton, who played his college football at the University of Miami, is in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center but is expected to live after being one of two people hospitalized.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said the crash took place just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the area of State Road 836 and 826 near Miami. For unknown reasons, the Ford F250 driven by Norton collided with a concrete barrier and overturned. A Maserati vehicle was also involved, but the driver was not hurt.

Miami Beach police said in a tweet that two off-duty officers, an EMT and a passerby rendered aid to Norton after the crash until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived.

Norton's agent, Malki Kawa, tweeted that the second year player's arm was amputated while asking for fans to continue praying for him and his family.

Kawa told NBC 6 that Norton will require additional surgeries.

"I don't know if he's fully aware of what's happened," Kawa said of Norton.

The Dolphins released a statement saying they were aware of the crash.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Kendrick and his family during this time," the statement read.

In three seasons with the Hurricanes, Norton combined for 84 tackles and had five sacks before leaving after his junior season.

The Jacksonville native was drafted in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers in 2018 before signing with the Dolphins in December.
