Defendant Indicted in Vallejo Kidnapping Initially Deemed a Hoax

A federal grand jury has indicted a disbarred attorney on a kidnapping charge in a California case that police initially dismissed as a hoax.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the grand jury returned the indictment on Thursday against 38-year-old Matthew Muller in the March kidnapping of Denise Huskins. Muller is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday. His attorney has said he plans to plead not guilty.

Muller, a Harvard Law School graduate, is accused of kidnapping Denise Huskins from her Vallejo home. After Huskins reappeared two days later, Vallejo police said at a news conference the kidnapping was a hoax. They have since apologized.

Huskins has filed a claim against the city seeking unspecified monetary damages.
