Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg to Schmooze U.S. Privacy Regulator

Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg will meet Wednesday with a member of the Federal Trade Commission, the same agency that is mulling over investigating the social network for privacy violations.

Sandberg will be meeting with Maureen Ohlhausen, a commissioner with the U.S. agency, according to Bloomberg News. “It’s just a general meet-and-greet,” Ohlhausen said. “I’m sure we’ll cover privacy along with other topics.”

The FTC was asked by privacy watchdog groups last month to investigate Facebook's new privacy changes that use members' photos and content without permission for ads.

“They’re bringing out their heavy guns,” Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, told Bloomberg News. “Sandberg’s being sent to do damage control.”

Chester's privacy group is one of the groups complaining about Facebook's policies. Facebook said that it hasn't changed its policies since 2011, but instead used new language. Facebook also declined to comment on this story.

However, the Sandberg/Ohlhausen meeting may not end with any resolution, because the FTC is closed because of the government shutdown.
