Google's Sneak Peak at Android 3.0

Google gave users a sneak peak of the latest incarnation of its Android platform, Android 3.0 or Honeycomb, the first version of Android created specifically with tablets in mind.

From the Google Mobile Blog:

Many of Android’s existing features will really shine on Honeycomb: refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. We’ve also made some powerful upgrades to the web browser, including tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing.

Although I still don't understand what "incognito mode" is -- it sounds interesting, but Google representatitves couldn't be reached for comment -- the 3D Google Maps is quite impressive (see the video below to view it.)

Google came out with Android 2.3, or Gingerbread, update in December so the quick turnaround of Android 3.0 is a bit surprising. However, Android 2.3 is still mainly for smartphones with small displays while 3.0 is for Android tablets with larger screens -- mainly because mobile apps made for smartphones look a little wonky or miniaturized on tablets. Motorola announced its new Xoom tablet will be running Android 3.0 and will be available in March from Verizon Wireless.
