Historic Hotel Lambert, Home Of Voltaire, Damaged By Fire

Hotel Lambert, located in Paris, was undergoing a renovation after its purchase by a Qatari prince in 2007.

The landmark 17th-Century Hotel Lambert, located in Paris, was recently "seriously damaged" by a fire, reports the BBC.

Located in the center of the French capital, on the Seine embankment, the Hotel Lambert was undergoing a renovation after its purchase by a Qatari prince in 2007. It was once home to Voltaire.

It took six hours for firefighters to take out the fire, which destroyed a large part (about 7,000 square feet) of the roof and a section of a central staircase. Fresco ceiling artwork painted by Charles Le Brun was also damaged by smoke and water. Neighbors had fount for the frescoes to be preserved in the renovation, but now they've "gone up in smoke or been drowned," anyway.
