Mark Zuckerberg Is Not Giving Away Millions to Facebook Users

It's the latest in a long line of "copy and paste" hoaxes that have circulated on Facebook.

No, Mark Zuckerberg will not give you millions of dollars for posting a Facebook status.

If you’ve been on the social networking site in the last few days, you might have noticed a number of friends posting a status thanking Zuckerberg for giving away $45 billion to lucky Facebook users.

The post claims Zuckerberg will be doling out rewards to the first 1,000 users who copy, paste and share the (rather dubious) message.

If you thought it sounded too good to be true, you were right. The message is just the latest in a long line of "copy and paste" hoaxes that have circulated on Facebook since its creation, according to a company spokesperson.

This particular prank is likely inspired by a very different, very real announcement Zuckerberg made following the birth of his daughter, Max, with wife Priscilla Chan. The couple said they would give away 99 percent of their Facebook shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a limited liability company (LLC) the couple uses to fund charity organizations. After the announcement, Zuckerberg was widely criticized for putting his money into an LLC instead of a traditional nonprofit.

In response, Zuckerberg said using an LLC gives the couple no tax incentive, but instead allows for more flexibility to execute goals.

Nowhere in his response, however, did the Facebook CEO say a portion of that 99 percent would go to Facebook users for copying and pasting statuses. So it's safe to stop hitting "CTRL+C" and "CTRL+V." [[363633911, C]]
