How to Avoid a Fake Computer Virus Trick

The scam uses fear of a virus to lure potential customers

It appears is no one is immune to being scared of a computer virus.

Natalie Morales of the "Today" show was lured in by a pop-up ad that said her computer was infected with a virus, and that she should call the number on the ad to get it fixed.

After speaking with the company, who touted clients like Apple and Microsoft, they said they could fix Morales' computer. For $400.

"I knew at that point, what they were offering wasn't true," she said.

Morales enlisted the assistance of "Today" investigative correspondent Jeff Rosen and computer security expert Jim Stickey to get to the bottom of the scam.

If you get such a pop up, press the escape key or quit your browser.
