iPhone Partly to Blame for Verizon Upgrade Fee

Verizon users hoping to upgrade to a shiny new iPhone or an Android will have to pay a little extra starting this month.

The wireless carrier announced that it will begin charing a $30 fee everytime a subscriber wants to upgrade to a new phone.

Verizon said in a statement that the money will go partly to fund customer support and online education tools.

But the move follows what other providers are charging to deal with the rising cost of subsidizing phones, such as Apple's iPhone.

The fee is another way for providers to recouperate some of the costs of subsidizing the smartphones so many of its users want.
