For the first time in their history, a military war dog was given a memorial service with full honors Saturday afternoon at Kentucky's Camp Nelson National Cemetery, NBC affiliate WLEX reported.
Dozens of people came out to Camp Nelson National Cemetery to pay their respects to Iireland, a 13-year-old military war dog who served overseas on two deployments. One of which was with her handler and Lexington native Joshua Sutherland, who served as a Marine.
"We deployed to Camp Fallujah in Iraq," Sutherland said.
Upon their return in 2009, Iireland was medically retired and the Sutherland's took her into their home.

"There was no quit in that dog. She had more drive than five other dogs and I don't have a bad memory of working with her," Sutherland said.
