700 U.S. Troops to Remain in Jordan After Exercise

Approximately 700 combat-equipped troops have been left in Jordan by the United States following a training exercise, President Barack Obama said Friday. The deployment was done at the request of Jordan's government, fearing the civil war in neighboring Syria. The troops will remain in the country until the security situation becomes less tense and the soldiers are no longer needed, Obama said. "This detachment that participated in the exercise and remained in Jordan includes Patriot missile systems, fighter aircraft, and related support, command, control, and communications personnel and systems," he added.
