Newt Gingrich indicated Thursday that he would support Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential nominee. Speaking before several thousand Republicans in New York, he reiterated that he was staying in the race but also said he was committed to a “unified” GOP. “If I were to become the nominee, he [Romney] would work all out because it is our grandchildren’s future at stake. If he becomes the nominee, Callista and I will work out because it is our grandchildren’s future at stake,” Gingrich said. NBC News reported the comments represented a shift in tone, as last month Gingrich said he would only support “unity for a purpose.”
