Record-Setting Polar Vortex Forces Millions Indoors

More than half of the U.S. population -- 187 million Americans -- grappled Tuesday with extreme cold as a result of the "polar vortex" Arctic weather system that has caused temperatures "we haven't seen in decades," according to one Weather Channel forecaster. New York City's Central Park fell to 5 degrees, beating a 118-year record for Jan. 7, NBC 4 New York reported. Wind chills made it feel minus 15 degrees. Philadelphia hit 4 degrees, and Washington, D.C., recorded 3 degrees.
