RIP MCQUEEN: The year started off with a devastating loss for the fashion community in the death of Alexander McQueen. News that the designer died sent shockwaves through New York Fashion Week in February and became a touchstone through the rest of the year.

SARAH BURTON TAKES THE HELM: Out of the tragedy of losing McQueen, a bright spot: The designer's protegee, Sarah Burton (who had been with him for over a decade), took the reins at the label and delivered a jaw-dropping, pitch-perfect Spring 2011 collection.

UNGARO BROUGHT BACK FROM BRINK: In 2009, the house of Ungaro made the poor choice of recruiting Lindsay Lohan, whose first (and only) collection was universally panned. By 2010, the talent was overhauled, and the label seemed to have new life thanks to British designer Giles Deacon.
FASHION WEEK MOVES TO LINCOLN CENTER: After decades at Bryant Park, New York Fashion Week (the beating heart of American design) moved uptown to a new home, bringing with it scanner-friendly invitations, bigger spaces and a whole new brand of circus.

ZAC POSEN CHOOSES PARIS OVER NEW YORK: New York wunderkind Zac Posen chose to leave the New York runways behind, showing his main collection in Paris this season (leaving a bitter taste in some critics' mouths). He did, however, leave the States his lower-price collection, Z Spoke, as a parting gift.
DESIGNER COLLABORATIONS GALORE: If 2009 felt strong in the collaborations department, 2010 was only more intense, from Zac Posen's successful line of dresses for Target to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's teen line, Olsenboye, for JCPenney.
MATERIAL GIRL: The most highly-publicized of this year's collaborations, however, was the launch of "Material Girl," a teen line for Macy's designed by -- you guessed it -- Madonna and daughter Lourdes, with Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen serving as spokeswoman.
WEDDING FEVER: In addition to the buzz surrounding what Chelsea Clinton would wear to her wedding (she chose Vera Wang), a slew of retailers hopped on the bridal bandwagon: J.Crew opened a wedding store, Urban was set to launch a wedding-focused line and Vera Wang announced she'd be partnering with David's Bridal.

FASHION GOES HIGH-TECH: Fashion finally came around to the Web and social media this year, led by brands like Burberry, which even streamed its Fall 2010 collection online -- allowing regular folk to purchase items they liked straight off the runway.

THE RETURN OF TOM FORD: After months of rumors, Tom Ford finally staged his first womenswear collection since 2004. True to form, he didn't opt for a traditional runway show but instead recruited a cast of stars (including Beyonce and Julianne Moore) to model the new pieces at an intimate party.

ANNA WINTOUR'S POWER: As if proof of the Vogue editor-in-chief's power wasn't already evident, Wintour's decision to spend only a few days in Milan forced organizers to completely change the schedule around. In addition, she managed to make the second year of Fashion's Night Out even bigger than the first.

THE BIGGEST FASHION SHOW IN NYC HISTORY: As part of the Fashion's Night Out bonanza, Wintour organized a massive outdoor runway show at Lincoln Center, featuring current-season wares from a slew of top designers and A-list cat walkers like Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell.

NAOMI'S UPS AND DOWNS: The supermodel made significant charitable efforts in 2010 -- most notably her efforts to raise money for Haiti relief -- but also faced scrutiny for testifying in the trial of former Liberian leader Charles Taylor from whom she allegedly received "blood diamonds." True to form: She testified wearing Alaia.

GUCCI LAUNCHES COUTURE: After watching brands like Armani, Elie Saab and Chanel dominate red carpet events with their couture lines, Gucci debuted its first couture dress at Cannes -- a slinky wine-colored number worn by Salma Hayek.

THE FALL OF AMERICAN APPAREL: The seemingly indomitable leggings-and-tees manufacturer stumbled this year, running up against a mountain of debt and watching its shares plunge. The label renegotiated its debt with Lion Capital by the end of the summer, but some analysts predict the brand is not out of the woods yet.

PLATFORMS: While loafers and jazz flats may be on-trend for Fall 2010 and flats made a comeback on the Spring 2011 runways, the platform has continued to dominate. They offer an unending stream of bigger-is-better options, like this Christian Louboutin pair on Phillip Lim's fall runway.

SCHOOLGIRL CHIC: Traditional femininity took a backseat to Buffy-meets-Clueless prep-school slick in 2010, complete with knee socks, stripes, loafers and collegiate sweaters.

CLOGS: After years of ridicule, clogs made a brave comeback this year, reaching a fever pitch on Chanel's Spring 2010 straw-covered runway. From sky-high and studded to chunky and patterned, the varieties have become limitless.
J.CREW'S RETAIL DOMINATION: Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably noticed that J.Crew had a pretty good year. A well-crafted combination of good styling, well-chosen products and solid collaborations launched creative director Jenna Lyons into the spotlight (and onto Oprah's couch).

PLUS-SIZE MODELS: Curves made their way onto more than a few runways this year -- and into the pages of the glossies as well. At the forefront was model Crystal Renn, whose striking features and hour-glass silhouette landed her a Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier campaign in 2010, among other accolades.

ANIMAL PRINTS: The surge in animal print separates and accessories for Fall 2010 was so strong that the question was less about whether you'd wear it and more about how you'd wear it. Accessories have, overall, won the day -- namely this Phillip Lim Knap Sack Quilted Tote.

CAT FASHION: What started as a goof -- United Bamboo creating a calendar of kitties in their stylish duds -- has become a cult sensation thanks to a rash of fashionable felines: Miu Miu's spring prints, a cat fashion show at a historic New York hotel, and more.

SEX AND THE CITY 2: The fashion hype around this sequel was seemingly boundless -- from Sarah Jessica Parker's plugging of her new Halston Heritage project to relentless dissection of the various outfits worn -- but ultimately the movie was definitely more style than substance.

"JERSEY SHORE": While their skintight style and questionable tanning habits might not be thought of as immediately "fashionable," the cast members made enough of an impression to be banned from fashion shows and warrant their own Halloween costumes.

J-WOWW LAUNCHES A LINE: "Jersey Shore" castmember J-Woww even used her newfound fame to launch a clothing line called Filthy Couture.

"JERSEY SHORE" GIRLS GET A MAKEOVER: To cap off the "Jersey Shore" mania, Harper's Bazaar even staged a makeover of the ladies in the cast, complete with tips on manners from socialite and fellow reality starlet Tinsley Mortimer.

JEGGINGS: They're jeans, they're leggings ... they're jeggings. In the never-ending effort to find the perfect fit, this cozy amalgam created a sensation. Here, a Forever 21 example of the trend.
CELEBRITY PERFUMES HIT A FEVER PITCH: Everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Mariah Carey launched a fragrance this year, with stand-outs including Bruce Willis' manly scent and Justin Bieber's fragrance, which the pop star plans to spray onto accessories like dog tags.
LADY GAGA GOES HIGH FASHION: Gaga has always been known for high-octane style, but this year designers responded in kind. The star was spotted in McQueen and custom Armani in addition to her standard shock-value outfits like this meat minidress.
GAGA'S STYLIST GETS A FASHION GIG: Gaga's main stylist, Nicola Formichetti, also benefited from the star's fame in the fashion community. Formichetti was tapped to lead the revival of fashion line Thierry Mugler, which has struggled to find footing after the brand's early success in the '90s.

THE KARDASHIANS ENTER THE FASHION REALM: Not just pretty faces anymore, The Kardashians collaborated on a line with Bebe this year and opened a new outpost of their boutique chain, Dash, smack in the middle of the venerable shopping area of Soho in New York.
THE CULT OF ANNA DELLO RUSSO: The editor of Vogue Nippon became a seemingly overnight cult hit for her spectacular outfits and a massive apartment just for her clothing collection. A series of T-shirts on bearing her image even sold out in one day.

THE RISE OF "MAD MEN" DESIGNER JANIE BRYANT: Last year, the world fell in love with the '60s aesthetic on the hit show "Mad Men," and this year, the costume designer of the show, Janie Bryant, cashed in with a special collection with HSN and a book on style.
