Officer Named in Fatal Shooting of Unarmed Student Feras Morad

The name of the Long Beach, California, police officer who shot and killed an unarmed student was released on Monday.

Officer Matthew Hernandez, a 12-year department veteran, was named in the shooting of Feras Morad, 20, whose family said was an aspiring lawyer and brilliant student who hoped one day to fight for justice for others.

Several dozen people gathered last week to march in support of Morad. The group called for national attention of the shooting, the name of the officer to be released and an indictment.

Morad was unarmed when he was killed by an officer. In a 911 call released last week, a caller describes an intoxicated man who fell or jumped from a second-story window, bleeding and acting "kind of irate."

Long Beach police have defended the officer's actions, saying he tried to subdue Morad by stunning him with a Taser and using a flashlight with force.

Friends of Morad, including some who were with him that night, claim the shooting was not justified.
