1 Killed in Shooting Near Linda Vista Recreation Center

A deadly shooting at a Linda Vista park took the life of a man believed to be just a teenager, and sent children playing in the area running for cover.

The shooting was reported around 4:46 p.m. on 7064 Levant Street near the Linda Vista Recreation Center, San Diego Police confirmed.

Witnesses said a group of men got into a fight. They stopped but one man came back and shot the victim near a table by the basketball courts, confirmed SDPD Lt. Martha Sainz.

The victim is reported to be around 19 years old was transported to a local hospital where he later died, officials said. 

NBC 7s Erika Cervantes was at the scene where a person was shot and killed near the Linda Vista Recreation Center.

NBC 7 spoke with some witnesses who say the park was full of kids when the shooting happened. They said they heard three gunshots and saw a group of kids who were at the basketball courts start running and taking cover. 

"It’s irritating. It’s not frustrating it’s irritating especially when you're having dinner with a friend and family and you hear that [gunshots]," said Linda Vista resident, Michael Hunter.

Cell phone video recorded following the shooting. It shows a group of people jumping over a fence, fleeing the area of the gunshots. As the camera holder moves closer to the scene, kids at a nearby skatepark can be seen apparently taking cover behind cement.

The camera holder eventually walks to the spot where the victim was lying on the ground. Several people can be seen compressing his wounds while waiting for paramedics. Others can be heard talking to the victim and trying to calm him down.

Crisis counselors consoled at least seven kids who were near the area of the shooting, SDPD said. 

Neighbors told NBC 7 they are concerned with the increase in violence in the area. 

There was no suspect description. SDPD Homicide Unit and the Gang Unit were conducting investigations.
