Opening: Crystal Cave at Sequoia National Park

The weather has warmed up and a seasonal wonder is ready for its annual hello.

WHATEVER ERRAND YOU'RE RUNNING, whatever dish you're cooking, whatever dog you're brushing, whatever work presentation you're helming, there is this truth: The caves of the world carry on, eternally and mostly out of sight, in a mysterious, subterranean fashion. Many of the planet's most damp and delightful hollows can't even be reached by humans, but some can, though whether those destinations keep year-round open hours is another matter. But if caves matter to you, and all of those ancient rock formations, then you likely keep tabs on just when your favorite below-the-ground, under-a-mountain marvels re-open for another good stretch. A Golden State go-to is about to throw wide the proverbial cave doors once again, and just in time for the traditional, road-trippin', see-some-nature summer season. It's Crystal Cave, inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and all of its lovely stalactites and stalagmites are once again there for your admiring pleasure as of...

FRIDAY, MAY 26: The Friday ahead of Memorial Day Weekend is a prime time to connect with a national park. Do note that Crystal Cave will again bid us lookie-loos adieu in September 2017, so choose your tour — the Family Tour, the Discovery Tour, the Wild Cave Tour, as well as others — then buy your tickets and begin your below-ground exploration. You'll learn all about the "... impressive chambers, magnificent formations, rare minerals, unique animals, and a polished marble stream" as you saunter along your cave-tastic adventure. You know there are big caves in the Southwest, and, of course, the South, too, as well as points around the globe. But have you made the acquaintance of Crystal Cave yet, right here in the Golden State? It's a wonder, and one that can be, and should be, enjoyed during the warm weather months.
