Police fatally shot a man suspected of attempting two carjackings in South Gate near the 710 Freeway in Los Angeles County, California, authorities said.

The victim was armed with a gun, though authorities were investigating whether the officer or the suspect shot first, according to the South Gate Police Department.

The shooting took place on Sunday at 4:58 a.m. in the 890 block of Kauffman Avenue, more than an hour after someone reported a man with a gun attempted to steal their car at a Jack in the Box at Firestone Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue, police said.

While officers searched the area, another person called in an attempted carjacking by a man who matched the description of the suspect from the Jack in the Box, police said. The gunman fled on foot, according to the victim.

Officers set up a containment of the area and saw a man armed with a gun emerge on the sidewalk, police said. A confrontation ensued and shots were fired. Detectives with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department were conducting the investigation into the shooting, including who shot first.

The man died at the scene and a revolver was recovered, police said. No officers were injured.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff's office at 323-890-5500.
