But sometimes autumn has a slower start in the southern half of California, an area that often experiences a pronounced lingering of summer. That's okay, and while it is still handy to head outside without a jacket, one begins to long for the hallmarks of the season, like cider, and caramel treats, and that straw-filled symbol, the scarecrow. Finding a swath of scarecrows though can be tricky, especially if you aren't near a farm or an area that may call upon the figures to watch over the fields. SCARECROW FEST 2016, one of the photo-ready highlights of the village's annual saunter into autumn. The scarecrows run the gamut, from sweet to quirky to eerie, and you can vote on your favorite (with Halloween serving as the day when the winner will be revealed). This isn't the only autumnal happening going on around the picturesque, lake-close burg; the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is holding its spooky Flashlight Nights on select evenings while Oktoberfest is a weekend staple 'round the town. Enhancing it all, though, are those hat-rocking, overall-adorable scarecrows dotting the center of the walkable Big Bear action.
