Set Your DVRs — “Boardwalk Empire” Debuting This Fall

The wait is almost over -- "Boardwalk Empire" will debut Sept. 19 at 9 pm Eastern, says the press release that just hit our in-box.

"Boardwalk Empire" stars Steve Buscemi getting a too rare lead role as Nucky Thompson, the notorious 1920s gangster/county treasurer who built Atlantic City, for good or ill. The first episode was directed by a young upstart named Martin Scorsese.

Buscemi leads a cast as good as you'd expect from a show with Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer (he also directed the pilot), with Kelly Macdonald ("No Country for Old Men"), Michael Shannon ("The Runaways"), Michael K. Williams (Omar from "The Wire"), Dabney Coleman and Michael Stuhlbarg ("A Serious Man") among the supporting players.

Former "Sopranos" writer Terence Winter developed the series based on Nelson Johnson’s book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City.
