A COLD FORETELLING: It sounds like something someone might read on an ancient fortune or in an old, dusty tome: "When snow falls on the mammoth, winter is nigh." But that's actually quite contemporary, and it is apparently coming true as we type. Snow fell in Mammoth on Thursday, Oct. 11 -- and is still falling -- meaning that it is only a matter of a month, or perhaps less, before the slopes start to open around the Golden State.
OPENING DATE: The opening date at the Sierra resort is still slated for Thursday, Nov. 8. As always, there are several opening weekend-type festivities scheduled, including a carnival.
OTHER OPENINGS: The Tahoe destinations'll get going soon after Mammoth: Heavenly Ski Resort at South Lake Tahoe is set for Friday, Nov. 16 while Squaw Valley is set to ski on Wednesday, Nov. 21. No opening date is listed for Yosemite's Badger Pass, but a general mid-December window is given.

SNOW GUARANTEE: Mammoth's Snow Guarantee is still afoot -- or aski, if you prefer -- but act soon. If you book before opening date or Nov. 8, and there are base depth issues when you go or want to go, you can change your dates. It's that simple, but as with anything that simple, you'll want to read all.
